Honda is undergoing a significant transformation, with a focus on electric motorcycles and flex-fuel engines to reduce emissions. Let’s explore what’s new and what to expect from Honda’s electric motorcycle plans.
Honda’s Electric Motorcycle Plans
Honda plans to launch 10 new electric motorcycle models in the coming years. The production of these vehicles will be subject to intense planning, with a focus on electric power.
Honda’s electric motorcycles will be categorized as follows:

The releases are not yet scheduled to come to the US. The main markets, initially, are China, Europe, and Japan.
Engines and Equipment
Honda plans to introduce flex-fuel engines in addition to its electric models. These engines will be able to run on both gasoline and ethanol.
The main focus, for now, is on mopeds. Honda plans to use its FUN platform for these models.
Honda aims to achieve 15% of total sales from electric motorcycles.
In addition to sales, Honda is also focusing on:
- Solid-state batteries
- Advanced power transmission technology
- Battery sharing network
Battery Sharing
Honda is part of the Swappable Batteries Motorcycle Consortium (SBMC). This organization involves companies such as Piaggio, Yamaha, and KTM.
The objectives of the SBMC are:
- Develop common technical specifications for interchangeable battery systems.
- Verify the possibility of sharing batteries.
- Define and promote common specifications to be proposed as a standard in Europe.
- Extend the adoption of common specifications to international standardization bodies.
